Hassan Sharif, Uncertainty of Systems will explore about his Semi-System works as a movement, transgressing categories and medium.
This solo exhibition by Hassan Sharif at the gallery examines his body of work entitled Semi-Systems.
In a subjective and transversal way, the exhibition occupies the ‘space’ of this generic term proposed by the artist and describes, like a permanent movement, the different forms it could take: punctuated by time and repetition, the systems can be read like a musical pulse; deployed in space, they are transformed into choreography; associated and coded, they are translated into language; punctuated, the sequences become narrative and are told. Their order and arrangement determine the unit of measurement, and their composition, at once programmed and random, varies according to the viewer. Hassan Sharif’s Semi-Systems, created freely in the artist’s mental space and carried along by a continuous movement on the fringes of all rules, exist beyond the exhibition space.
“Since 1980, I have produced a series of works related to constructivism, which I have entitled “Semi-Systems”. These works are constructed from very simple instructions, numbers or letters of the alphabet. I manipulate them to create straight, curved or broken lines or geometric shapes (often squares), which I execute with ink on paper or using different colours on medium-sized canvases. (…) Sometimes I make mistakes; I keep them as they are without correcting them, because I believe that ‘Art’ is the result of mistakes.”
Hassan Sharif’s entire body of work pays homage to that fragile moment when things balance out or tip over and come to life.
