Elené Shatberashvili
solo show
Nov 18 - Dec 19, 2023
We are delighted to present the first solo show by Elené Shatberashvili with her recent paintings, drawings and objects.
Silent and contemplative, the works of Elené Shatberashvili (1990, Tiblisi, Georgia) readily turn to memory and introspection. Having grown up in post-Soviet Georgia, Elené Shatberashvili has been living in Paris for the past ten years, switching from her architectural studies to her pictorial quest at the Beaux Arts de Paris. Featured in several major group shows, including Immortelle at MoCO and Entre tes yeux et les images que j’y vois at the Fondation Pernot Ricard, Elené Shatbearshvili’s first solo show is at gb agency.
“I like to find objects around me, or in my studio that have emotional value, or things from people that remind me of some of my important cultural references, not just Georgian ones, but Christian or other ones too.”
In soft, often muted colors and compositions that deny the codes of perspective, with figures and scenery on the same plane, the young painter recounts the consequences of uprooting and the complex relationship with her origins, notably through her own image represented in a number of self-portraits. Her paintings often contain numerous framings within the frame, be they windows, pictures, mirrors or smartphone screens, creating a subtle mise en abîme of painting and icons.
