Sublimations originates on the artist travels through Venezuela’s Salto Angel Falls. These images depict the place where the waterfall lands, one in which the water initially falling a thousand meters above has largely become steam and mist. The grand-format works are done by drawing by elimination, a technique developed by the artist in which pressured air removes particles over a surface delicately covered with Naples Yellow. A colour made our of lead antimonate, it is one historically associated with the death by intoxication of countless artists assistants who had to work with the dangerous yet uniquely radiant pigment. The sublimation of elements, materials and the attraction of the abyss by explorers and artists alike is combined in these images.
