In these sculptures, a bronze cast of a human ear (the artist’s) weighs down a stack of offset printed text on paper. These are notes for a ‘novel in progress’, that never seems to arrive. In this pursuit, Early Research Methods adopt multiple literary guises and forms; censored fan mail, prose, excerpts from interviews, passages culled from developmental psychology books, sparse, absurd snatches of dialogue between unnamed characters. In Early Research Methods, literary and philosophical fragments find a sculptural form, and Cally Spooner’s novel-in-progress orientates its future, via the exhibition.

In this particular sculpture, a gestalt therapy text from the 1950s is transformed into an ExpertWitness; a character in a fictional court case.
