This publication documents the exhibition “Július Koller. One Man Anti Show at mumok in Vienna. The exhibition was the result of a multi-year research project devoted to the oeuvre and huge archive of the Slovak artist Július Koller, a centra figure in European postwar art who passed away in 2007. Many of the works on view were being shown for the first time, opening up a new perspective onto Koller’s singular endeavour to subject everyday life and the political, social and media realities of late modernism to an artistic transposition. His goal was to make room for new, freer ways of thinking and acting that transcended the power dispositives and semiotic regimes of his day.
This volume, augmented by statements on the design of the exhibition and floor plans of the three stories of the museum where it was shown, faithfully maps the works and texts as they were presented in the show. The choreography of the book follows an imaginary circuit through One Man Anti Show.
A system of cross-references allows the reader to match the work groups and display settings seen in the gallery photos with the plates in the appendix, which show the title and origin of the individual works according to their placement in the exhibition architecture, as well as to the explanatory texts for each new group. The publication “zooms in on” these ork groups, showing selected works in a larger format.
