Robert Breer

Robert Breer (1926, Détroit - 2011)

Après des études d’art à l’université de Stanford (où il obtient sa licence en 1949), Robert Breer débute une carrière de peintre. En 1949, il emménage à Paris et rejoint la galerie Denise René.

En 1952, il réalise son premier film, ce qui l’amène, à partir de 1959, à cesser de peindre et à créer ses premiers mutoscopes. De retour aux Etats-Unis, il s’installe à New York et, à partir de 1965, expose ses sculptures en mouvement à la galerie Bonino. Le prix Max Ernst lui est décerné en 1969, lors du Festival du Film de Oberhausen (Allemagne).

En 1970, il initie et co-réalise avec le groupe E.A.T le pavillon américain Pepsi pour l’Exposition Universelle d’Osaka (Japon).
D’abstraits, ses films deviennent plus éclectiques à partir de 1971, intégrant des images rotoscopées et des photographies.
En 1973, il commence à enseigner le cinéma à Cooper Union, NewYork. Une première Rétrospective lui est consacrée au Whitney Museum en 1980. Un an plus tard, le Film Forum de New York lui passe commande d’une grande peinture murale.

En 1999, ses peintures, films et sculptures sont réunies lors d’une exposition au Staff USA / AC project Room, New York. En 2000, un de ses Floats monumentaux (acquis dés 1971) est présenté lors de l’exposition ‘Useless Science’ dans les jardins du MoMA, New York.

Le Centre Georges Pompidou, Musée National d’Art Moderne le convie en 2001 à une rétrospective de ses films organisée en lien avec son exposition personnelle que lui consacre gb agency, Paris.
Son film ‘Fuji’ entre à la Bibliothèque Nationale du Congrès à Washinghton en 2001. En 2005, le prestigieux prix Stan Brakhage lui est remis à Denver, Colorado.

En 2006, Le Musée d’Annecy lui organise une importante exposition monographique ‘Films, Floats & Panoramas’ accompagnée d’un livre.
Récemment Robert Breer a été présenté lors de l’exposition ‘Le Mouvement des images’ au Musée d’Art Moderne à Paris (2006-2007) et à la Kunshalle de Bâle dans l’exposition ‘Poor Thing’.

Pour l’exposition ‘The Death of the Audience’ à la Sécession de Vienne en 2009, Robert Breer a été invité à réaliser de nouvelles sculptures. Il a crée des murs en mouvements d’exposition.

A partir de l’automne 2010, ses Floats seront exposés dans la grande nef du CAPC de Bordeaux, puis une rétrospective itinérante lui sera consacrée, commençant en 2011 au Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead, UK et au Musée Tinguely, Bâle.  Une nouvelle publication monographique accompagnera la rétrospective.
