Jiří Kovanda est né en 1953 à Prague. Il vit et travaille à Prague (République Tchèque).
Jiří Kovanda rejoint les artistes du mouvement ‘body art’ au milieu des années 70 et réalise des actions (performances) minimales, discrètes dans les rues de Prague. L’activité passive de Kovanda rejoint quelque peu le situationnisme. La plupart de ses actions corporelles se déroulent dans la ville. Elles sont tellement intrusives qu’il est presque impossible de les différencier de la vie réelle. A Prague dans les années 60, le mouvement Fluxus a trouvé un écho. L’expérience politique du printemps de Prague s’est résumé en un nettoyage de l’espace public. Jiri Kovanda utilise cet espace public comme une sphère mentale, dématérialisée et la performance comme un processus de changement.
