In the suburbs of Shenzhen, the Dafen Oil Painting Village is renowned for its specialty: the replica of master paintings. In order to understand the conceptions of the art of the copyist painters who work there, Paul Heintz began in 2017 a correspondence of paintings and drawings with one of them. Alongside these exchanges, he also developed a visual production on the axes of correspondence, film and “para-painting”, resulting in Shānzhài Screens (literally “copy screens”).
