MM12H is the documentation of By All Accounts is Was A Very Ordinary Man. In this performance, an ordinary man inconspicuously roams the gallery, slowly dismantling a bar of soap. Staging how clichés, fake news and banality creep into language and life through a reification of communication, the work coats the gallery in stickiness and smell. Created at an unprecedented political moment, in which reality felt degraded, the work assumes this degradation, and its spread into the global atmosphere, at the level of language.
For MM12H, used soap is cast in solid silver, valued, hallmarked, inscribed with the ordinary man’s initials, and the number of hours he was paid to handle soap. Part documentation and record of passed time and labour, MM12H is equally a prop to think about the financialization of data and language into a stock financial commodity.
